Guy Kurosawa. The greatest detective in the world. He stared through the blinds in his office at the rain outside. It had been raining heavily all day, a perfect reflection of his mood. He lit up a cigarette as he dwelled on his inner thoughts. Something was stirring inside; something foreign but not entirely unwelcome. What kind of fortunes should he expect in the future? What sort of future was awaiting him?

It had been a long time since his last case. The very core of his being stirred in anxiety. He was never the kind of man to be cooped up in his office day after day. But, he knew it wouldn't be too much longer. Even if it be a lonely dame that lost her cute little puppy, he was ready for any sort of case. He needed to know what was going on in this town of his. What was causing her to be so uneasy. It was a mystery that needed to be solved.

The doorknob turned...! Guy turned and took a long draw on his cigarette and turned. Finally, his next case--!

"Why does it smell like smoke in here?!"

Guy paused mid-breath in shock as Kiko threw the lights on and stormed toward him.

"I thought I told you that you weren't supposed to smoke in here!"

"I-I..." Guy stuttered, unprepared for his assistant's outburst.

"And what's with this music?" Kiko almost laughed, gesturing toward Guy's computer, which was emitting the sounds of rain and jazz under the screensaver of flying toasters. "Trying to look cool? And what an ancient screensaver... Get with the times!"

Her accusing smirk was almost too much to bear. "You should respect your elders, Kiko!" Guy blurted at her, but Kiko simply laughed derisively back at him.

"Who would respect a dirty old man like you?" She yanked on the drawstring, raising the blinds to let in the piercing midday sun. "And were you pretending it was raining again?"

"N-n-none of your business!"

Kiko snatched the still-lit cigarette from his hand and smothered it in the ashtray, before getting right up in his face. He leaned backward in disgust as the creepy pink-haired creature drew closer to him. "And you smell like ass! Take a shower already!"

"KIKO!"

As the girl harrumphed and made her way to her own desk, Guy turned 180 degrees and resumed his pseudo-serious demeanor.

"You haven't noticed, have you, Kiko?"

"Hmm?" Kiko grunted, hunched over at her computer.

"This city is uneasy."

"What sort of nonsense are you spewing now?"

"Something's going to happen here soon, I'm sure of it." He turned back to the window, trying to imagine rain in place of the dazzling sunshine from the false sky above Tokyo. "We're going to have to be prepared when it comes."

"Would you pipe down?" Kiko now had headphones in. "I'm trying to watch my anime!"

Outside of the building, a young blonde foreign girl stood, gazing up at a sign. Her lips moved as her eyes scanned the text, brow slightly furrowed in concentration.

Ku... Kuro... Sawa...

She checked the screen of her cell phone to confirm the address and, after a light shrug, walked inside and up the stairs. Luckily her friend had thought to send a picture message of the right door, so she found it easily and knocked.

...!

Guy and Kiko both jumped at the knock. It had been weeks since anyone but the two of them had ever stepped through that door. Was the next case truly upon them?

"Wh-who is it?" Kiko mumbled from behind her desk, while Guy bravely approached the door and peered through the peephole.

Guy furrowed his brow. "Some young girl. Are those cat ears?" he added derisively.

"Out of the way!" In an instant, Kiko had crossed the room, jamming an elbow into his side and slamming him against the wall. The detective crumpled in pain as his assistant opened the room. Kiko then calmly opened the door and smiled politely. "Hello there!"

"Kiko!! Oh thank goodness, I thought for a second I had the wrong place!" Emma smiled brightly and bowed to the detective. "My name is Emma Sherman, I'm a friend of Kiko's. It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Kurosawa!"

Guy spasmed for another brief second before snapping to attention in a dignified pose. "Pleasure to meet you too, young lady," he said, his voice smooth. "My name is Guy. Guy Kurosawa. Japan's number one dete--"

"No one's impressed," Kiko drawled, shattering the illusion instantly. She returned to her sugary sweet voice as soon as she turned back to Emma, though, dragging her inside toward her desk, which was decorated with anime and manga paraphernalia. "How have you been, Emma?! It's been so long since we've talked! What's new?"

"Oh, the usual. I think I totally blew a math test, though. I'm going to be so bummed if I score under 95. How have you been?" She suddenly gasped, turning her attention to Kiko's monitor. "You're watching this series!? You won't regret it, I promise! I found some doujinshi yesterday, too!" Emma rifled through her school bag, pulling out a stack of thin, cheaply printed comics. "We should totally go shopping this weekend, I heard about some big sales. ♥♥" Little hearts of bliss were somehow audible in her voice.

"Absolutely!" Kiko squealed, snatching some of the doujins out of Emma's hands, drooling. "Bara no Morris is my favorite series ever!! Oh! You even have this one... I've been looking for it forever!"

At the mention of shopping, Kiko's eyes sparkled, but she was quickly sedated by a thought. "Ahhh~ About that." She let her words reach Guy as well, who had settled back on his desk, trying desperately to ignore the girls. "The TV guy came yesterday. We couldn't cover the bill."

Guy sat up straighter. "Are you serious?"

"If we don't get a case soon, they're really gonna cut me off!" She rounded back on Emma. "How can I go shopping when I'm in danger of losing Bara no Morris forever~?!"

Emma's eyes almost seemed to water as she clutched Kiko's hands. "Oh no...!! We have to do something! I promise I'll help you find a case, I'll ask around at the dorms and everything! Sure, you can buy DVDs later but that's later and it's not the same if you don't watch it live!! The first viewing experience is so important!"

"I'm glad you know how I feel!" Kiko wailed as she wrapped her arms around Emma. "If I don't get to see it live, I'll die! We definitely have to do something!" She pounded her palm with her fist emphatically. As if as a sign, though, there was yet another knock at the door. Kiko and Guy both hid again under their desks.

"I-It's the TV guy, I'm sure of it!" Kiko whispered fearfully. "They're gonna cut me off!"

But, a timid voice echoed from the other side. "E-Excuse me?"

Guy perked up. "It's a woman! And she's hot!"

"How do you know?!"

"I'll take good care of you!" said Guy, whipping over to escort the lady to the couch. "My name is Guy! Guy Kurosawa! The number one detective in Japan!"

Kiko turned to Emma and mimed puking.

"So you are a detective!" the lady began hopefully. "I need help!"

"But of course!" Guy took a heroic pose. "Whatever it is that you need, Guy Kurosawa is on the case!"

"Oh good! You see, I lost someone dear to me, and I have no idea where she went... I'm at the end of my rope... I feel like I could cry at any moment in despair..." Indeed, tears came to her eyes.

"Ah, a missing person case..." Guy mumbled to himself. "How exhilarating!"

"Please, I need you to find my missing cat, Mi-chan!"

Those words hung in the air, Guy frozen in place, and after several seconds, he blanched. "A c-cat, you say?"

Finally, the woman withdrew a picture. "Here's what Mi-chan looks like."

Guy struggled to maintain his confident pose. "Well, of course, I would love to help you anyway I could." His face paled again. "But… you want us to look for a cat?"

She nodded, while Kiko slowly crept up behind the woman. "It was a cat that I and Yuzuki, my husband, treated like our child. I don't know how he would feel about me losing Mi-chan..."

Guy found an opening. "So that means your husband is still…"

"Oh, I’m sorry. My husband passed away a few years ago." She didn't even notice as Kiko sniffed at her, before reeling from the heavy scent of perfume rolling off of her.

Guy painted sympathy on his face, trying to win points with her, though his hesitation was still as clear as day. "Oh, I’m so sorry… I know how you feel. I don’t mind searching for people, but… cats are…"

She seemed sad as Guy showed hesitation. "I see. I thought it might have been rude to ask this of a detective."

Guy leaned forward. "No, that’s not it at all! I’d definitely search for a dog… but cats…"

The woman pressed harder. "I would pay 500,000 yen." Kiko snapped up, the lust for cash visible in her eyes.

Emma gently pulled Kiko off to the side, voice hushed. "They say when God closes a door He opens a window, and opportunity doesn't knock twice. If Kurosawa-san has something against cats, he needs to get over it. I'm not advocatin' taking advantage of a woman in mourning, but... well..." She shrugged, glancing back over at the woman. "It's what she wants to do. You've got a case, she'll get her cat."

"Exactly!" Kiko agreed. "We'll get the money and save TV!"

"I will pay you half up front," the woman continued. "You don’t have to pay me back if you don’t find my cat."

"Well, that’s beside the point…" Guy continued with hesitation, but Kiko swiftly flew in and stomped on his foot, drawing a pained scream from him.

"We’ll look for Mi-chan! Leave it to the Kurosawa Detective Agency!"

"K-Kiko!" Guy began to protest, but when the woman's face lit up, all his sensibilities were defeated.

"Thank you so much!" she said, elated. Instantly, she reached in her purse, and pushed forward the photo of Mi-chan, her home address, and a stack of 250,000 yen. It was all Kiko could do not to leap upon the money immediately. "If you need to reach me, please come to my house and I'll take care of you! I'll be looking forward to hearing back from you!"

"Thank you so much!" the woman said with tears in her eyes. "I can't wait to see Mi-chan again!"

After many more pleasantries, the woman bid them adieu and left. When Guy and Emma turned back to Kiko, the wad of money had magically transported itself to her hand.

"We're on the case!" she declared. "BUT, first! I say in celebration of our good fortune, we all go out to eat!"

"Sounds good to me! Oh, and I even know the perfect place! The Homerun Cafe! It's my favorite place to eat!"

"Kiko," whined Guy. "Don't you think we should save that money?"

"It's 250,000 yen," Kiko argued. "That's over two thousand American dollars! We can afford to splurge a little!"

Guy started to argue again, but his stomach growled. He couldn't help but chuckle. "I guess my stomach gave me away!"

******

Thirty minutes later, the trio were seated around a table at the Homerun Cafe, after making a short stop for Guy to pick up a newspaper. Now, baseball played on the TV behind them and the chef was busy behind the counter. A few tables away from them, a man gobbled down food at lightning speed, a dozen empty bowls stacked on the table next to him.

"One gyūdon, please!" Kiko called to the chef behind the counter, who was busy preparing the Chinese man's next meal.

"Make that two!" Guy called.

Emma chimed in. "Make that three, please!"

"So, Kiko, what are you going to do with the rest of the money? Besides the TV, I mean? It is a lot." Her eyes lit up as she came to the perfect conclusion. "Brand. New. COSTUMES."

Bayle walked down the street. She was starving now and vowed to eat at the first place she saw that was open. That place happened to be the Homerun Cafe. She marched up to the counter, forgetting she was still in her blood splattered shirt and sunglasses and that a bit was still dotting her face. It wasn't an unfamiliar situation to her, unfortunately. She gave the person at the counter her best smile and asked for a bowl of gyudon.
